The Social Media Rankings by Industry ranks global brands according to critical social engagement and performance factors. Using advanced social media monitoring and social analytics, we also compared mentions and reach, as well as awareness, passion, and sentiment. The result is a comprehensive picture of the competitive social landscape for each industry.

Methodology

The NetBase platform gives us the ability to search through the billions of social conversions that occur each year and distill them into actionable insights. In this case, we tracked the social conversations directly mentioning a preselected group of brands for each industry. Our analysis of brand performance looked at total volume of conversation, reach (a measure of owned impressions), brand awareness (as a measure of earned impressions), net sentiment, and our own NetBase brand passion score.

Social Media Ranking Factors Explained

  • Mentions: The total number of times the brand was mentioned in social conversations.
  • Reach: The total number of impressions from original tweets posted by a brand. This includes any replies to or retweets of the brands tweets. We consider this a measure of "owned" impressions.
  • Awareness: The total number of impressions from all tweets that mention a brand, excluding those that are classified as owned tweets. We consider this a measure of "earned" impressions.
  • Net Sentiment: On a scale of +100% to -100%, how positively or negatively a brand is perceived based on an aggregate analysis of social conversions of the brand.
  • BPI Rank (Brand Passion Index): On a scale of 0 to 100, the measure of the amount of emotion towards the brand (regardless of sentiment).

Social rankings are based on an average measure of each metric, with the largest, most positive, or most passionate brands ranking first. The analysis looked at English-language conversions, but was country agnostic.
